Photographer showcase: Ash Sekulich
First up, introduce yourself. Who are you and where are you from?
G’day! I’m Ash Sekulich @ashseko, a music photographer based in Brisbane, Australia
What’s the most memorable show you’ve photographed?
There are so many to choose from, but shooting Pierce The Veil at Riverstage earlier this year definitely takes the cake. Years ago, I photographed them at Eatons Hill Hotel—one of the very first gigs I ever shot. Seeing how much they’ve grown since then, surrounded by an incredible crowd in such a massive outdoor venue, felt like a true full-circle moment. It really made me pause and reflect on my own photography journey, and how much I’ve grown.
Which artist is your white whale, the one you’d love to photograph?
It has to be Miss Paramore a.k.a Hayley Williams. She’s effortlessly cool, and is the voice of a generation. As a longtime Paramore fan, shooting her is a massive bucket-list goal. Australian tour dates just dropped, so I’m crossing my fingers!
Which three festivals would you love to photograph and why?
How could I not say Coachella? It consistently pulls in those rare, once-in-a-lifetime lineups and iconic sets. Glastonbury and Lollapalooza are definitely right up there too.
How do you keep track of the shows you’ve requested to shoot and the ones you’ve been approved for?
A very intricate spreadsheet system (I'm only half-kidding). I usually map out the year month by month and update it as new tours drop. Australian Music Scene is my go-to for staying on top of every gig announcement and what’s happening locally.
What’s your favourite photo you’ve ever taken? What’s the story behind it?
That’s like asking me to pick a favourite child! One standout is the crowd at Fortitude Music Hall during Hot Mulligan’s Australian tour. In true Aussie fashion, the band was pressured into a rite-of-passage shoey—but they refused, daring someone in the audience to do it instead. A beer was quickly crowd-surfed from the bar to a willing volunteer, and I captured the shot right as the room erupted in victory.
Name three photographers whose work you admire.
Ashley Osborn @ashleyosborn: Ash has been in the game for years and is truly that girl. I’ve followed her journey forever and am constantly inspired by everything she creates—and seeing her shoot the Emmys recently was unreal!
Christian Waite @chrwaited: Christian has such an incredible eye. His approach to capturing live moments is effortlessly creative and unique, and he’s never afraid of raw grit and texture. I love that about his style.
Jordan K. Munns @jordankmunns: An Aussie photographer operating at the absolute peak of the industry, covering iconic gigs worldwide. Watching someone from home make that kind of global impact is amazing to see.
